Dive In

Not everybody is in the pink of their health in their eighties. He has never misused his liberty while on bail...Some people may run marathons in their nineties. Some people are healthy in their eighties and nineties, some not.

That’s what the Supreme Court said while granting bail to the 83-year-old poet and activist Varavara Rao—who had been held without bail or a trial in the Bhima Koregaon case. Rao was finally given interim bail after 2.5 years—and this more permanently ensures his freedom. More shocking to us: Additional Solicitor General SV Raju—appearing for the National Investigation Agency—adamantly opposed the bail plea. When asked by the court what punishment Rao would face if he is found guilty, his answer: "Death." To understand why this is shocking, check out our Big Story on the growing evidence that the accused have been framed.
