Dear Hoping-for-fresh-butter-and-an-uncongested-fridge Subscriber,
We’ve got you covered! Here are four not-too-bulky butter dishes that can go in the fridge, and one not-too-bulky butter bell crock that can be used to store butter without a fridge:
This mint-green butter dish makes us think of the 50s retro style aesthetic of Smeg appliances. It looks vintage, but also timeless and modern. It's compact at 12cm (l) x 8cm(b) x 7cm (h) and made of food-safe mild steel. Handwash is recommended, and while capacity isn't mentioned on the website, we think it should easily hold a 200g brick of butter based on its dimensions.
We like the clean look of this white ceramic butter dish and appreciate the inclusion of the bamboo tray for additional stability. The ceramic dish and lid is both compact, at 13cm (l) x 10.7cm (b) x 2cm (h), and dishwasher-safe when used without the bamboo tray. It's made entirely of non-toxic and BPA-free materials and can hold a 100g brick of butter.
This bamboo and ceramic butter dish would be our personal pick for a non-bulky butter dish that can go in the fridge. The body is ceramic, the bamboo lid comes with a silicone seal that keeps butter fresh and we love the convenience of the ceramic and stainless steel spreader knife that has its own slot in the lid. The smallest size it comes in is 15cm (l) x 8.5cm (b) x 6.7cm (h), which should accommodate standard 100-200g butter bricks, but it also comes in a large size that is 17cm (l) x 10.7cm (w) x 8.3cm (h) which should better accommodate a 500g brick of butter in terms of the height when taking into account the size of the lid seal. (Standard 500g butter bricks in India are between 4-6 cm in height.) It's both dishwasher and microwave-safe without the bamboo lid.
Monochrome Harmony Butter Dish
We like the clean yet earthy look of this handcrafted ceramic stonewear butter dish. It's a compact size at 15.24cm (l) x 10.16cm (b) x 8.89cm (h), and should easily fit 100-200g bricks of butter. Note: As it's individually handcrafted by artisans, there may be minute irregularities that make each piece one-of-a-kind.
Butter bell crocks are a great way to store butter outside the fridge. They keep butter soft and spreadable at room temperature by using an airtight water seal to protect the butter. You use it by firmly packing a softened brick of butter into the inverted bell-shaped lid, and placing it upside down into the base which is filled with cold water to a depth of about an inch (It is important to press out any air pockets to prevent the butter from falling into the water). The water creates an airtight seal that protects the butter's flavor and freshness while keeping it at the perfect spreading consistency. For best results, the water should be changed every two to three days and the crock should be stored away from direct heat or sunlight. This particular one has been designed to hold upto 100g of butter and has a rustic farmhouse look that we like.
