We recommend: Pop culture and history podcasts
Princess Diana Series by You’re Wrong About: You’re Wrong About is one of Nirmal’s all-time favourite podcasts. Hosted by Sarah Marshall and Michael Hobbes (before he moved on), it is a podcast that explores misunderstood history. Every episode is about an event, a person, or some phenomenon from our past that has been miscast or misunderstood by the public.
With many questions around Kate Middleton these days (see our Big Story), we thought it would be appropriate to revisit Princess Diana’s story and how we perceive it. It is a five part series, and if you’re even remotely interested in the Royal Family, you will enjoy this. Every episode functions as a fun educational lesson, a critique of media and some doses on how society thinks about truth. This is a must listen.
Are Books Dead by Anurag Minus Verma Podcast: The Anurag Minus Verma podcast has some of the best conversations around Indian society, culture, art and history. This particular episode is special if you’re someone who has always dreamt of becoming a writer. In a conversation with Chirag Thakkar, a longtime publisher in India, they discuss the unknown world of book publishing in India. What does it take to become a writer? What kind of books do Indians read? (Hint: It’s a non-fiction genre) How do you even pitch books? This is a fun conversation and Chirag has packed it with some incredible insights on how the publishing world works.
Hank Green Unpacks YouTube’s Biggest Problems by Colin and Samir: Hank Green is like an old-wise sage on YouTube, having been publicly for over two decades now. For many, this one half of the vlogbrothers is a source of inspiration, knowledge and joy. This conversation with Hank Green is beautiful. It’s about how Hank Green has been dealing with cancer, his journey on YouTube so far and what he thinks about the creator economy going ahead. If you think about the creator economy, and are curious about the lives of different artists and content creators then Colin and Samir’s podcast is worth your time.
Vijayanagar - The Last Emperors of South India by Fall of Civilizations: Ancient history is always fascinating. It looks at one of the most impressive empires in South India and why it failed. You’re going to learn some incredibly fun and interesting things.
Divine Frequency with Hunter Schafer & Lorde by A24: The Euphoria star and Australian popstar get together to discuss fashion iconography, their emotional processing, journalling, their artistic leanings, popular culture, spiritual beliefs and more. It makes for some very calming tea-time girl-talk banter with a special focus on the bonus episode of HBO’s Euphoria that was co-written by Schafer and featured Lorde’s music.
A24’s podcast series features the actors, musicians and filmmakers behind the movies and shows associated with the entertainment company and production house. Every episode features two artists in conversation from the worlds of Everything Everywhere All At Once, Midsommar, Uncut Gems, HBO's Euphoria, Hereditary and Moonlight. We recommend this episode for an easygoing exchange on young female ambition, desire and being in the spotlight.
