British artist Lubaina Himid was the first Black woman to win the prestigious Turner prize. She remembers someone in the art world actually telling her, “Black people don’t make art.” This surreal painting—titled ‘Le Rôdeur: The Exchange’—reimagines a dark moment in African history. In 1819, slaves carried by the French ship Le Rôdeur were struck by a mysterious disease that made them blind and many were cast overboard.

In 2020, Australian cricket legend Steve Waugh took a three-week trek across India and captured this stunning photograph of children playing cricket in Rajasthan’s Thar Desert. The image—which beautifully captures our love for this sport—was awarded the Wisden Cricket Photograph of 2020. It was also included in Waugh’s book titled ‘Spirit of Cricket India’.

The original, handcrafted Indian Constitution was intricately illustrated by artist Nandalal Bose and his team from Kala Bhavana, Santiniketan. Each of the 22 parts of the Constitution begins with an illustration tracing the history of India—from Mohenjo Daro to the national freedom struggle. This is a depiction of Buddha’s enlightenment in Part 5.
