A list of intriguing things
One: Last week, 100 men from around Europe descended on a Bavarian town in Germany to compete in the annual Beard Olympics. Daily Mail has an entire gallery of hirsute heroes, but our favourite is this one.
Two: Since we’re coming up on Halloween, here’s an Annabelle-like contest where folks get to vote for the creepiest historical doll. The nine antique toys in the running include a doll dubbed Lizzie Borden in a nod to the 19th-century murder suspect. Our votes go to Miss Abyss and Gagool below. (Smithsonian)
Three: Wonder what sound waves ‘look’ like? Artist and filmmaker Josef Gatti collaborated with composer Kim Moyes to create a visual experiment that combines water, salt and music. The results are mesmerizing—but may not be as pleasant to those who are sensitive to flashing images. Or for a calmer but similar experiment: Watch the sheer artistry of chemical reactions here. Four: Designed by architect Moon Hoon, the Republic of Korea Pavilion is a giant shape shifting sculpture at the Dubai Expo. The exhibit is made up of 1,597 spinning cubes that put on a spectacular display meant to reflect the spirit of the Korean landscape. Watch a snappy video on its wonders over at Mashable.
Five: A bunch of evolutionary biologists tried to imagine what animals will exist on Earth millions of years in the future—who will survive climate change, enormous amounts of plastic and rampaging humans. For example: The fully aquatic whale-rat. Read about the other strange creatures in this fascinating Vox piece.
