Dive In

I read a couple pages. I didn’t read the whole thing cover to cover.

That’s what Hadi Matar—the man who attacked Salman Rushdie—said when asked if he’d read ‘Satanic Verses’, the novel which earned the author a fatwa from Ayatollah Khomeini, the then Supreme Leader of Iran. Matar simply said of Khomeini: “I respect the Ayatollah…I think he’s a great person. That’s as far as I will say about that.”  Asked why he targeted Rushdie, he offered: “I don’t like the person. I don’t think he’s a very good person. I don’t like him. I don’t like him very much.” ICYMI: check out our Big Story, to know about the almost-forgotten roots of the fatwa.

The de-extinction debate: Should we raise the dead?

The TLDR: The Tasmanian tiger is the latest target of an ambitious effort to bring back animals that have long disappeared. But what about the many species that are teetering on the edge of extinction right now? Does this hurt or help them?
