Dive In

Bring it on BJP! Am a Kaali worshipper. I am not afraid of anything. Not your ignoramuses. Not your goons. Not your police. And most certainly not your trolls. Truth doesn’t need back up.

That’s what Trinamool MP Mahua Moitra tweeted in response to an FIR filed in Madhya Pradesh for “outraging religious feelings.” The alleged crime: At an India Today conclave, Moitra had responded to a row over a movie poster for ‘Kaali’—which shows the goddess holding a cigarette in one hand and an LGBTQ flag in another. Moitra spoke of her personal conception: “Kali to me is meat eating... Alcohol accepting Goddess. To me, that is a version of Kali.” Her own party has distanced itself from Moitra’s remarks, but she remains defiant. Meanwhile, in Canada, the Aga Khan Foundation has cancelled plans to launch the film—on the request of the Indian High Commission. Indian Express offers a brief profile of Moitra if you’re curious about her.

Big Story

The Gauri Lankesh Case: Missing the real connections

The TLDR: The trial of the 17 accused of conspiring to murder Lankesh finally got underway last month—nearly five years after her murder. The defence strategy is clear: blame the victim. And while it may not work to acquit the killers, the most important facts may already be buried—the connections to three other killings and the role of a cult-like Hindutva organisation called Sanatan Sanstha.
