Coz I’m unwinding at the beach…
Editor’s note: This month—we asked you for breezy beach bops—to put together the ultimate summer playlist. We ended up with a much more interesting mix—with tracks perfect for contemplating waves and sunsets. It makes a nice change from clichéd cheery summer compilations. You can check out the full playlist over on our Spotify account!
- ‘Summertime’ by New Kids On The Block: Starting off strong with some 90s nostalgia. Sunaina says this song from the pioneering boy band perfectly encapsulates the beach vibe. Enjoy it to the max by watching their music video here.
- ‘In the Summertime’ by Shaggy and Rayvon: This is Sourabh’s pick. He likes to listen to happy reggae music as they are “easygoing, relaxed yet energetic.” And this one for sure, checks off that list!
- ‘Espresso’ by Sabrina Carpenter: Of course, the song of 2024 had to be on this list! Rhea says it has “nice summery vibes” and who are we to disagree?
- ‘Shut Up and Dance’ by Walk The Moon: This new-age classic dancefloor number was recommended by Nikita—who finds the song “nice and upbeat”. She adds, “It's fun and makes you want to move!” We couldn’t agree more!
- ‘Magnolia’ by Playboi Carti: The song chorus may say “on the block” which makes it more of a New York song but Rahul convinces us that its “bouncy beat” will make us wanna jam to it on a beach.
- ‘Hooligan’ by Baby Keem: Here’s another rap and trap song. According to Rohit ‘PMan’ Pereira: “One listen to it at the beach and you will know why.” Okay, sir!
- ‘Little Deer' by SPELLING: A song as melodious and cathartic as the oceans! Madhusudan took the philosophical route with the prompt—saying: “Beaches are where I think about the people I care about, and this song is a good soundtrack to those thoughts.”
- ‘Hiding from the Sun’ by Slush Pool, Fabian Hernandez: The song is from a synth pop group based out of Mumbai. Anurag listens to this song as he finds it “very refreshing” and offers a “groovy pool or beach-side sound.”
- ‘10,000 Emerald Pools’ by BØRNS: This slow electro pop is Sumedh Natu’s go to as it “really captures the vibe of wanting to sit outside and have fun”—something we all love doing during breezy summer nights!
- ‘Though I know’ by Tajdar Junaid: Bhoomika really likes this song because it is “very breezy”. Accompanied on a uke, we think this would make for a good beach campfire song!
- ‘Groovy Kind of Love’ by Phil Collins: Here’s another one to wind down to. Nivriti suggests it because, “The song is very calming and adds to the positive romantic vibe of the sea.”
- ‘Some Feeling’ by Mild Orange: Nidhi admits this is not the most upbeat one but finds it a comforting song. She defines her version of beach music for us: “I can picture myself sitting at the beach, watching the waves go by and a beautiful sunset in the sky. The song is calming and that's what a beach is to me.”
The splainer team’s picks: Our Advisory Editor, Arunima, recommends ‘Summer Breaking’ by Kevin Parker and Mark Ronson as it reminds her of “summer in a small, breezy, cool jazz town where I am the main character on summer break.” Isn’t that lovely! Our News Editor, Aakriti, has two excellent recommendations for you: ‘Água de Beber’ by Quarteto Jobim Morelenbaum which has a “saucy, but languid beach vibe” and ‘Moon River’ by Frank Sinatra which brings about the imagery of the sea at night, especially when you can see the moon over the beach waters.” OTOH our Assistant News Editor, Aarthi, went full Bollywood and added ‘Khuda Hafiz Anjaana Anjaani’ from the movie ‘Yuva’. For them, “it is the quintessential beach song!”
