Coz I’m vibing to vibgyor…
Editor’s note: This month, we shared an AI playlist prompt with our splainer fam and asked them to send us their fave song titles that include a colour. The result is a vibrant compilation with every hue of genre and language. Tune in to the rainbow, baby! You can check out the full playlist over on our Spotify account!
- ‘Red Right Hand’ by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds: Fans of ‘Peaky Blinders’ need no introduction to this song. Sooraj Soman loves the “mood it sets.”
- ‘Red dress’ by MAGIC!: A passionate take on the colour red. As Kriti says, “Colours the picture for you in the song.”
- ‘Red Rubber Ball’ by The Cyrkle: For some old-school pop, Sumedha suggests this “soothing classic that gets you to shrug off what's happened and look forward to the future.” All of us can use a bit of that!
- ‘Irish Eyes’ by Rose Betts: Srishti recommends this sweet song inspired from the Celtic folk music. In case you’re wondering, Irish eyes are blue.
- ‘Kathai Aankhon Wali’ from ‘Duplicate’: Did you know the word for brown in Hindi is ‘kathai’? Neither did Priyansha, till she heard this song. An apt ode to us brown eyed Indians—which brings us to…
- ‘Brown Eyed Girl’ by Van Morrison: This classic is a favourite of Suneera and Anita—likely because they’re brown-eyed girls:)
- ‘Dhaani’ by Strings: Agrima says of this indie rock number: “It's not just a song, it's a happy place that's home to the fresh, vibrant notes of that exact shade of green they keep repeating in the lyrics.”
- ‘Black Magic Woman’ by Santana: Suneera loves everything about it—the lyrics, music, composition... There’s a reason why it’s a classic.
- ‘Back to Black’ by Amy Winehouse: Aarathi suggests this one because “it’s Amy Winehouse.” Duh!
- ‘Neele Neele Ambar Par’ from Kalaakaar: TBH this song belongs on an excellent karaoke playlist but it fits our theme just as well. Aaishwarya Jain says: “Nostalgia and the fact that it makes me imagine a clear blue sky instantly!”
- 'Nilla Aakasx' by Papon: This too describes the blue sky but in Assamese. It reminds Prerna of “an incoming storm about to disrupt the blue night sky.” Ooh, sounds lovely!
- ‘Orange Sky’ by Alexi Murdoch: If you think blue skies are overrated, Anand Kumar Singh offers this number as “excellent soft music.”
- ‘Purple Rain’ by Prince: Anita likes this song for its “rhythm and brooding quality.”
- ‘Rang’ by Amjad Sabri and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan: This Coke Studio gem suggested by Lavisha covers the entire spectrum.
- ‘Colourblind’ by Darius: Despite the misleading title, Vaneesha assures us that the lyrics mention all the colours! It is one of her “go-tos to express teen angst.”
- ‘She's A Rainbow’ by The Rolling Stones: One last classic to complete the list. Monica says: “It's been in turn, a lullaby sung by my father, an oft-dedicated song on Radio City in the aughts, and as a song atypical of the Stones, serves to remind about the possibility of variety and nuance in our personal discographies.” Ok, there’s not much we can add to that!
The splainer team’s picks: Our Advisory editor Arunima adds ‘Blu’ by Benee because “it perfectly encapsulates the sads of yearning.” Her second selection is ‘Yellow Flicker Beat’ by Lorde as it “gives me all the feels and it's so anthemic.”
Aarthi really likes ‘Vincent’ by Don Mclean for “it instantly brings Vincent van Gogh’s vivid colour palette to mind!” For those who love Punjabi folk, Aakriti recommends ‘Kali Teri’ by Hari & Sukhmani: “It's a song I love for its appreciation of beauty in the physical form, in love, and in nature.”
