This is a version of Newsha Tavakolian’s series—where she created imaginary covers for CDs of Iranian women artists—to highlight the ban on women performers. The Chennai Photo Biennale Awards spotlight the “most impactful photos with meaningful stories” from across the country. This year, they received a whopping 9,700 entries from over 300 cities. Of the 10 winners, our fave is this photograph of a newly-wed couple during the Masi Magam festival in Mahabalipuram—taken by Akilan Thyagarajan.
