We love country singer Luke Combs' reverential cover of Tracy Chapman’s ‘Fast Car’. Now, some of us may not like the idea of a white male profiting from a Black lesbian woman’s art. Then again, Chapman is now poised to make history as the first Black woman to hit #1 on the country music charts—and earn insane royalties thanks to Combs. What’s amazing: “He didn't change the words in the line, ‘Now I work in the market as a checkout girl.’ Didn't change the job, didn't change ‘girl’ into a gender-neutral monosyllable like ‘clerk,’ just sang the words as written.”
FYI: No one knows what Chapman makes of the reboot—including Combs. If you have no idea wtf we’re talking about, we strongly recommend listening to the original here. You will never get it out of your head. It will break your heart and have you singing along.

Here’s a lovely slice of film history: a radiant Smita Patil with her co-star Om Puri and pipe-smoking director Satyajit Ray.
