A list of curious facts
One: Did you know that people around the world memorialise their loved ones by etching their most beloved recipes on their gravestones? The recipes are mostly for desserts and “give relatives a way to remember the sweet times and, they hope, bring some joy to visitors.” There’s even an Insta handle that tries making some of these headstone recipes! (New York Times)
Two: File this one under ‘alarming facts’. The latest scare over marijuana use involves ‘scromiting’—or scream vomiting: “a condition characterised by bouts of abdominal discomfort and nausea so painful it can cause a person to scream.” Apparently, this is a real condition that affects a small group of heavy, habitual marijuana users—and is also a result of the higher levels of tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, in the pot sold in the US today. Three: Ooh, here’s some good news for lazy teeth-brushers. Scientists have developed a swarm of microbots that will act like a toothbrush, rinse, and dental floss in one. How it works: These are iron oxide particles that are magnetic—and can be shaped into a bristle or floss-like form to get into every nook and cranny of your teeth. They release antimicrobials to kill oral bacteria—and, most importantly, can keep that dreaded dentist at bay. (University of Pennsylvania)
Four: Leela Row was a Sanskrit scholar, stage actor, classical dancer and…the first Indian woman to win a match at Wimbledon in 1934—defeating Gladys Southwell 4:6, 10:8, and 6:2. PaperClip has a lovely thread or check out this Mint Lounge profile.
