A list of curious facts
One: We tend to think of migrating animals like travel ninjas—magically able to cross vast distances without losing their way. Umm, maybe not. New research into hawksbill turtles show that they’re more like humans in the pre-Google Maps era—wandering around until they stumble on the right location: “Many random loops and double-backs occurred before the turtles reached their intended destination. One turtle swam more than 800 miles to reach a spot that was a little more than 100 miles away.” Lol! Below is an example of what their routes typically look like. (Smithsonian)
Two: Sticking with the animal kingdom, did you know that there is a genus of freshwater carps known as Haludaria—named after an obscure Indian artist, Haludar. He drew stunning illustrations for British naturalists like Francis Buchanan who were mapping animal species on the subcontinent. But when Buchanan published the ‘Fishes of Ganges’ in 1822—Haludar was cited merely as a “Bengali youth.” And he remained unacknowledged until Sri Lankan naturalist Rohan Pethiyagoda proposed naming the carp after him. See one of his illustrations below. (National Herald)
Three: Reddit’s wildly popular thread ‘Am I The Asshole’ now has an AI rival called ‘Are You The Asshole’—which will respond to your most pressing questions. And its answers and morality is every bit as dubious as Redditors. For example:
