A list of intriguing food things
One: Yes, ice cream noodles is a thing. It is called Spaghettieis—and was created by the son of an Italian immigrant and owner of an ice cream parlor in Mannheim, Germany, in 1969. No one anywhere else in the world has anything similar. Here’s a recipe if you are feeling adventurous.
Two: Think that’s nuts? How about ice cream burritos?
“To assemble, the vendor lays out a flour crepe and shaves fine pieces of peanut brittle over it. On top, he adds three scoops of ice cream, often in flavors like pineapple, taro, or peanut. After a sprinkle of cilantro... he folds the edges in and rolls up the contents into a burrito-esque creation.”
Need to see it to believe it? Here you go!
Three: Someone baked a cookie on a Mac power adapter. Hmm, we’re not sure if we believe it...
Four: Has fried rice ever been this pretty? This is ‘tahdig’—pan-fried Persian rice with a perfectly golden crust—which lends itself to all sorts of artistic possibilities. Also, as the ‘artist’ Iranian-American baker Varta points out: “At the end of the day, it’s a fried carb, and fried carbs will always do well. You take any sort of comfort food and you fry it, it’s going to be good.” You can find Varta’s recipes on Insta, or read more about her over at Atlas Obscura. If you want to skip the artsy bit and just take a break from the usual biryani/pulao routine, Saveur has an excellent list of tahdig recipes. Samin Nosrat’s ‘Persian-ish’ version is designed for beginners.
