A list of curious facts
One: This is the first ever on-screen kiss featuring Canadian actress May Irwin—and filmed by none other than the great Thomas Edison, the inventor of the light bulb and camera. Maria Popova has more over at BrainPickings.
Two: This is the African crested rat—a toxic rodent with its own chemical weapon. The reason scientists think it’s awesome: "Basically, it's the only known mammal to date, at least that we know of, that co-opts toxins from a plant to make itself venomous." The rats gnaw at branches of the poison arrow tree, and rub the spittle into their fur. Oh, they are also very loving and monogamous—and kinda cute. NPR has more.
Three: Researchers have discovered a new species of burrowing frog. It’s name: Sphaerotheca bengaluru. The reason: it was found on the outskirts of the Garden City. No, sadly it is not cute.
Four: This 20-minute video is more alarming than curious—but it is totally worth your time. It painstakingly details the different parts of the world that will be entirely underwater by the end of this century. Skip to around the 14-minute for the really bad news: The end of Bangladesh!
