That’s what Lok Sabha member NK Premchandran said of the Criminal Procedure (Identification) Bill—which was rushed through the lower house by the government. The proposed law gives sweeping powers to law enforcement agencies to collect biometric data and physical and biological samples of anyone convicted, arrested or merely held in preventive detention. The government insists that the law has to keep up with the times—in the use of technology to collect data. The opposition see it as a violation of basic fundamental rights and the first step toward a surveillance state. Firstpost has a useful guide to the bill.
