Dive In

An unmarried woman who suffers a pregnancy beyond 20 weeks can suffer the same mental anguish as the married woman. Why should she be excluded from termination up to 24 weeks if a married woman is allowed to do it. We have to also move ahead when there is so much development around this.

That’s the Supreme Court granting unmarried women the right to terminate a 24-week pregnancy. As per existing law, only married women—and others in special circumstances, such as minors, rape survivors etc.—are allowed to seek an abortion between 20 and 24 weeks. The court described this distinction as “manifestly arbitrary.” So this is a significant step toward gender equality in our abortions laws. Also see: this useful Big Story on our laws.
