That’s an insight from the latest Oxfam report titled ‘The Inequality Virus’ that lays bare the ugly truth of the pandemic: it made the already wealthy richer than ever, while pushing hundreds of millions into poverty. And not just in India. This is the first time since records were kept that income inequality has risen in virtually every country on Earth. Here’s a statistic to keep in mind: In September 2020, Jeff Bezos could have paid all 876,000 Amazon employees a $105,000 bonus and still be as wealthy as he was before the pandemic. Similarly in India, the increase in Ambani’s wealth alone could keep 40 crore informal workers out of poverty for at least five months. |
