The rising inequality in the country is poignant... it would take an unskilled worker 10,000 years to make what (Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh) Ambani made in an hour during the pandemic... and three years to make what Ambani made in a second.
That’s an insight from the latest Oxfam report titled ‘The Inequality Virus’ that lays bare the ugly truth of the pandemic: it made the already wealthy richer than ever, while pushing hundreds of millions into poverty. And not just in India. This is the first time since records were kept that income inequality has risen in virtually every country on Earth. Here’s a statistic to keep in mind: In September 2020, Jeff Bezos could have paid all 876,000 Amazon employees a $105,000 bonus and still be as wealthy as he was before the pandemic. Similarly in India, the increase in Ambani’s wealth alone could keep 40 crore informal workers out of poverty for at least five months.
A day of great chaos and violence
The TLDR: Republic Day celebrations turned into a pitched battle between the police and farmers—who broke past their barriers, and entered the heart of Delhi. The reporting (and opinionating) was every bit as chaotic as the events. We pieced together what we know the day after to understand what happened and why.
