Art and about: A great list of art exhibitions
Editor’s Note: Here’s one for the art lovers. The splainer team has curated a great list of art shows across cities that you can view before the dreary monsoon days set in. A Ghulammohammed Sheikh retrospective, Sudhir Patwardhan’s Bombay cityscapes, a rare collaboration with Jaipur Rugs, printmaking, and so much more.
Inheritance of a Feeling: We kick things off in Method Kala Ghoda, where Dheeraj Jadhav marries an inkblot style with influences from Banjara folklore—centred on introspective imagery. The goal is to evoke shared emotions and collective histories around memory, loss and healing—’Images of One’s Relativity’ is a good example.

After Silence: Also in Method, this solo exhibition by Harshh Kumar—who is a Delhi-based artist. His works engage with themes of identity and memory. But what caught our eye were the broad brush strokes and the use of colours—like this one titled ‘I went for a walk’ or this untitled piece.

Van Gogh — An Immersive Story: This one’s for the casuals rather than the connoisseurs. If you missed out on the Van Gogh 360 experience in 2023, you get another bite at the cherry this time around. The name of the game is pretty simple—enter a tent and immerse yourself for an hour as you’re surrounded by animated projections of the iconic artist’s best known works.

Cities: Built, Broken: By Sudhir Patwardhan whose work captures Mumbai’s changing cityscape—from hopeful construction in the 80s and 90s to today’s crowded chaos. His work explores urban alienation and social divides, revealing the city’s political layers. The piece ‘Abandon’ stood out, spotlighting disillusionment and inequality in the city’s stratified life.

We don't end at our edges: Ravikumar Kashi breathes new life into the Kannada alphabet by using paper to ‘paint’ letters for display in a bold and evocative statement about the significance of language as a repository for humans’ experiences and communication. I Dissect Therefore I Am: Anirban Mitra’s immaculately intricate paintings are chockablock full of references to pop culture, myth, archives and his own observations—which are then juxtaposed with a broader historical context and a frame shaped by Bengali folk idioms. Yes, that’s as much of a mouthful as the level of detail in his works—one of which you can see below.

Through The Line and The Lens: Is a major printmaking retrospective. Curated by Rekha Rodwittiya, it presents a rich collection of the prolific work of Jyoti Bhatt’s prints, photographs, and writings from Bhavna Kakar’s archive. Celebrating over six decades of his work, the exhibition highlights Bhatt’s unique blend of traditional folk motifs with modern printmaking, as well as his dedication to documenting India’s cultural heritage through photography. Our top choice has to be the 1972 piece titled ‘Reminiscence’ for its sheer detailing and variety. See it below.
