The Independent Photographer‘s People Photography Award features wonderfully diverse photos from across the world. The winner this year was a street scene taken in Kolkata by Billy Dinh. This striking photo—which rivals the surrealism of a René Magritte painting—is titled simply ‘Shirley’. Taken by Claudette Holmes, it is part of the book ‘Shining Light’—which features groundbreaking photographs by Black female photographers from the 1980s and 1990s in Britain.
