Taken by Claudette Holmes, it is part of the book ‘Shining Light’—which features groundbreaking photographs by Black female photographers from the 1980s and 1990s in Britain. Kanako Abe is known for a Japanese artform called Kirie—”intricate compositions of flora and fauna carved from single sheets of paper.” The scenes are drawn from the Japanese folklore of Nush—portraying wild spirit animals inhabiting mountains and forests.
