We recommend: The best new global music
Editor’s Note: We’ve pulled together the best new tracks and albums—both international and Indian—that dropped this month. Tune into October’s playlist on splainer’s Spotify.
‘Eros’ by Micah Thomas: This melodic jazz will have going back to it constantly. The partnership between the drummer and the bassist is sublime—creating a unique sense of flow. Thomas’ piano playing is the binding agent between elements in this song from a promising young jazz musician.
‘Sweet Sounds of Heaven’ by The Rolling Stones: The second single in the English rock band’s studio album ‘Hackney Diamonds’ features American musicians Lady Gaga and Stevie Wonder. It is truly epic—with a rock n roll gospel vibe.
‘You First’ by Paramore and Remi Wolf: The rock band Paramore released an album ‘This Is Why’ earlier in the year, and recently, they asked many artists to remix that album. ‘You First’ is an experimental and refreshing version.
'Sarkaare' by King: This song is extremely catchy with its soulful lyrics and melody. The artist is an Indian rapper who appeared in the top five on the first season of the reality show MTV Hustle. Since then, he has released hits such as ‘Tu Aake Dekhle’ and a remixed version of his already popular song with Nick Jonas called ‘Maan Meri Jaan (Afterlife).
‘Tekken 2 (ft Chaka Khan)’ by Bombay Bicycle Club: The English indie rock band collaborated with disco icon Chaka Khan for this retro pop number. We absolutely love this groovy track which also has a super fun music video.
‘The Tern’ by Beirut: This single from the American folk-indie band was released ahead of an upcoming album ‘Hansel’ slated to come out in November. Its almost hypnotic bass and drums are courtesy of an old Roland synthesiser—which gives a trance-like feel to the track.
‘Ice Slippin’ by Omar Apollo: The Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter already released this track. But it’s officially the lead single for his upcoming EP ‘Live for Me’—which came out early this month. The beautiful piano ballad was written after Apollo came out to his family and received a “cold judgement”—and its video highlights the struggle of being a young gay man.
‘Hello’ by Hania Rani: This is part of her latest album ‘Ghosts’. The song is both eerie and playful—with a catchy melody. We also recommend listening to ‘Nostalgia’ from the same album.
We have also added other bonus tracks to the October playlist on Spotify—so be sure to check it out!
