Sweden’s Loreen won the Eurovision contest for her pop ballad ‘Tattoo’—beating out contestants from 25 other countries. FYI: this year’s competition became a bit of a PR event for Ukraine—who was supposed to host the event this year. Due to the war, the privilege went to the UK—which played up the war to the hilt. But the politicisation of the contest is hardly new. Back in 1956, West Germany’s entry was a Holocaust survivor—to signal a break from its horrific Nazi history. The Guardian and BBC News have lots more background on the contest if you care. As for Loreen, well, she’s lovely but no ABBA—sorry, our standards for Swedish pop are high lol!
