Tara is an independent publishing house in India, known for engaging with a diversity of tribal and folk art. Their beautifully produced publications range from children's picture books to graphic novels and photo books. Here are some of our favourites!
In ‘Sita's Ramayana’ Samhita Arni puts across an effective retelling of the epic saga of war in the words of Sita. The recreated visual narrative is a poignant meditation of how women become pawns in the wars created by kingdoms and men. Moyna Chitrakar's illustrations beautifully complement the reflective tone of the narrative.
We also loved ‘Hope Is A Girl Selling Fruit’ by Amrita Das, a young Mithila painter from Bihar. Amrita narrates the story of a young woman and her thoughts on mobility, freedom, adolescence, and identity.
‘Elephants Never Forget’ is a joyful children's tale by Anushka Ravishankar about an elephant who gets lost in the forest and finds company with a herd of buffalos. Illustrated in wood-cut style, the story delves into companionship, loss, and adoption.
And finally, we absolutely enjoyed reading ‘I Like Cats’—a gallery of feline characters from the best tribal and folk artists. It has everything from happy cats, sad cats, angry cats, and naughty cats to scowling cats—a complete delight for cat lovers!
