This stunning 1969 photo—of a woman decorating a bullock in Rajasthan—was taken by Jyoti Bhatt, an early student of one of the first art schools set up after India's Independence. He became one of the country’s foremost modernist photographers—a brilliant chronicler of rural India. BBC News has a lovely collection of his photos. TIME magazine put out its unranked list of top 100 photos of 2022—which captures everything from the Ukraine war to the Iran protests, the Westminster dog show and the death of Queen Elizabeth.
