Dive In

It is pertinent to mention that there is [sic] no financial constraints for providing [him] with better treatments within India or abroad but he is now adamant on his decision to go for euthanasia, which also affects the life of age old parents miserably.

That’s from an unusual petition filed in the Delhi High Court by a woman seeking to block her friend from flying to Europe—to seek assisted suicide. According to her, the man suffers from chronic fatigue syndrome—and is now almost entirely bed-ridden. His application to the Zurich-based Dignitas—which offers physician-assisted euthanasia—is being evaluated for mental fitness. The petition asks the court to block his emigration clearance for lying about his reasons for the European visit. FYI: only passive euthanasia for terminally ill individuals is legal in India.

An I-Day reminder: Come August 15, the splainer team will be busy waving tirangas—of the khadi kind to be especially patriotic:) So there will be no daily edition on Monday.
