Dive In

What we are calling for is an active ‘Parthenon partnership’ with our friends and colleagues in Greece. I firmly believe there is space for a really dynamic and positive conversation within which new ways of working together can be found.

That’s the deputy director of the British Museum responding to Greece’s demand for the so-called Elgin Marbles. The sculptures—17 figures and part of a frieze—were “taken” by Lord Elgin from the 2,500-year-old Parthenon temple on the Acropolis in the early 19th century. No, this “partnership” does not involve actually giving the marbles back to their rightful owner. We offer this as another stellar lesson from the post-colonial guide to being totally shameless:)
