That was one of the angry reactions to Spanish artist Santiago Sierra’s work ‘Union Jack’—which shows the British flag soaked in the blood of indigenous people from colonised territories. Sierra had invited people from countries and territories colonised by the British Empire to donate a small amount of blood for the exhibit as “an acknowledgment of the pain and destruction colonialism has caused.” His critics think they’ve already given enough of their blood. The plans to exhibit the artwork have now been cancelled. |
