The words ‘British’ and ‘wildlife’ don’t exactly go together. So we were surprised to find there is indeed an annual British Wildlife Photography award. There are no regal lions or impressive gorillas here. But this delicate image of the common blue butterflies by Ross Hoddinott reminds us wildlife comes in different shapes and sizes. Elisabetta Sirani’s ‘Timoclea Killing Her Rapist’ is a homage to feminine rage. It shows Timoclea pushing her rapist—a captain in Alexander the Great’s army—into a well. As the story goes, she then dropped rocks on him until he died. Well, sometimes giving yourself permission to feel angry feels good—as many women know.
