A list of intriguing things
One: ‘Mission Impossible’ wasn’t entirely based on fiction. Jonna Mendez—the former CIA Chief of Disguise (yes, this is a real job)—shows off special masks developed for spies. They could put it on in five seconds—and it allowed them to frown, squint and speak. Atlas Obscura has a cool video report.
Two: Back in 1942, 16-year-old K Karunakaran invented the Vageeswari—one of the world’s iconic cameras. The first camera was sold for Rs 250 to a studio in Alappuzha, Kerala, and it could take photos in eight different sizes—from passport-sized photographs to large group pictures. Artist Anu John David recently exhibited photos taken with the Vageeswari—“reverse-painting” the black and white negatives to create lovely images like the one below. Mint Lounge has the fascinating story of the Vageeswari. And you can get a better look at the camera here.
Three: Say hello to ‘joots’—a “magical combination of jeans and boots” also described as “pantaboots” or “pantashoes.” It is the new fashion trend favoured by the likes of Kim Kardashian—highly recommended for date night. Though good luck getting them off if you’re in a hurry to get naked lol! If that worries you, we suggest opting for the JLo version—Versace boots that look like jeans. (The Cut)
Four: British artist Simon Beck creates intricate and gorgeous works using just acres of snow, snowshoes and a compass. He has created 200 such ‘pieces’ around the world. Here’s what he did in Utah. You can read more about Beck over at Artnet.
