A list of curious facts
One: Remember the Google Glass that bombed back in 2013? Envision smart glasses turned an updated AI version of it into an amazing device that helps blind people scan documents, faces and unfamiliar spaces—and relays that information through a built-in speaker. It’s a bit pricey at $3,500 but will hopefully become cheaper with time and scale. See a demo video below. (Cnet)
Two: We regret to inform you that there is now a fashion trend called “coastal grandmother aesthetic”—which reflects the style of the “crisp, monied, perennially summertime lifestyle of a beautiful older woman.” Also described as: “understated, wealthy-person dress up.” She even has a younger sibling called the ‘Nautie Auntie’. Sigh. (Glamour)
Three: For a more inspiring bit of fashion trivia, did you know Victorian women climbed mountains in long skirts? As in real mountains… not a teeny, tiny hill. See more fabulous photos here.
Four: Leading space researchers have a bold proposal to make contact with alien life: sending nude images into outer space. We kid you not. This is a serious proposal that includes NASA scientists. The plan is to beam a message out to any extraterrestrials in the Milky Way. Here’s how they want to say ‘hi’:
“The message includes a time stamp, location stamp, visual representations of the DNA double-helix structure and a hydrogen atom, visual explanations of algebra and other mathematical operations, an illustration of the solar system, a map of the earth, and, of course, a smiling illustration of two human bodies, one male and one female. The pair are waving at the viewer.”
Of course, there are other scientists who think this is a terrible idea. And still others who think the aliens are already here.
