Human portraits are always powerful. We get an uncanny feeling of looking right inside someone else’s lives, even souls. These are two of the winners of the LensCulture Portrait awards 2021. One is an intensive care unit nurse—photographed at the end of a 12-hour shift at the height of the pandemic in Italy. The other—titled ‘Paradise Island’—is an image of a woman from Tuvalu, a tiny nation whose two of nine islands are almost under water due to rising sea levels. The Guardian has the rest.
