We adore 86-year old Portuguese artist Paula Rego’s paintings, described by Saatchi gallery thus: “Paula Rego paints a world of dark fairy tale where childhood stories are thin guises for psycho-sexual intrigue and taboo, where magical realism rules, where nothing is certain except the witchy powers of feminism.” And she is the master of the unexpected as with this disturbing painting titled ‘Dog Woman’: “To be a dog woman is not necessarily to be downtrodden; that has very little to do with it. In these pictures every woman's a dog woman, not downtrodden, but powerful. To be bestial is good. It's physical. Eating, snarling, all activities to do with sensation are positive. To picture a woman as a dog is utterly believable." Check out an excellent collection over at Saatchi and/or read BBC News’ profile.
