A list of curious facts
One: The world’s most booked Airbnb is a tiny mushroom-shaped dome in the California redwood forest. The 100-square-foot Mushroom Dome has hosted more than 5.8k Airbnb guests from all over the world. The Hustle tries to explain why. Nope, it doesn’t look like much:
Two: The Y chromosome is teeny with just 45 genes in comparison to around 1,000 on the X. Worse it is shrinking over time—and may well disappear entirely. Hey, don’t shoot the messenger! LiveScience explains why this is happening—and why we will still have males and females, irrespective.
Three: True story: In 2004, the entire Sri Lankan national handball team disappeared while on a sports exchange program in Germany. They just upped and vanished—leaving behind a note that said simply: "We're going to France.” Organisers were furious, but the Sri Lankan government was just plain confused. The reason: Sri Lanka didn’t even have a handball team. Yes, there is even an award-winning movie called ‘Machan’ based on this crazy story. And to add to the insanity, here’s the trailer of the movie… dubbed in Italian 😂! (we can’t find the original so why not?).
Four: How old would you be on Jupiter? Or maybe Venus? Based on NASA data, this calculator helps you calculate Elon Musk’s (or your) age as a Martian—or any other kind of extra-terrestrial in our solar system.
Five: Last not least, if you’re ever attacked by a sea snake, don’t take it personally… it’s just trying to have sex with you. As in, a “reproductively active male, highly aroused, mistakes the diver for another snake” during breeding season. Also: sea snakes have dreadful eyesight. Vice has more on this alarming discovery.
