Dive In

We are grateful for every innovative moment, every crazy dream, every sleepless night that went into this historic effort. We hope this story can be the beginning of hope and not the end.

That’s the statement put out by the son of David Bennet—who became the first person to receive a heart transplant from a pig in January. He died two months after the operation—and the immediate cause of death has not been revealed. Point to note: Baby Fae lived only 21 days when a previous such transplant was performed in 1984. Bennet received a gene-edited version of the heart to prevent rejection.

Stuff to check out: On the latest episode of the splainer podcast ‘Press Decode’, the splainer team discussed the politics of rescue—be it freeing students in Ukraine or the ocean of plastic waste. Be sure to head over to the IVM website, Spotify or Apple Podcasts to listen to it.

Big Story

The Russian invasion: The looming oil sticker shock

The TLDR: An increasingly isolated Russia bombed a maternity hospital—revealing that the sanctions have done little to blunt President Putin’s will to seize Ukraine. Perhaps because he knows Russia’s pain will soon be felt by the rest of the world. Skyrocketing oil prices threaten the recovery of fragile post-pandemic economies, especially India—which may become collateral damage in a war it prefers would just go away.
