Dive In

The deity has survived for 800 years without any worship. Let them survive like that.

That’s what a Delhi court judge said in response to a petition demanding the right to worship at the Qutub Minar—which still has remnants of idols from Hindu and Jain temples destroyed by Qutb al-Din Aibak. Meanwhile, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) opposed the petition, saying: “The revival of worship cannot be allowed at a monument where such a practice was not prevalent at the time of it being granted ‘protected’ status.” We explained the context of all of this in our Big Story.

It’s party time! Splainer and our partner, the independent bookstore Champaca, are throwing a joint birthday bash this Saturday in Bangalore. The Knowhere bar is one of our favourite places in the city—with a lovely vibe. Come raise a drink and meet the team and some excellent folks. We’d love to see you there. Since spaces are limited, please sign up over here. It also helps give us a ballpark head count.

Time/ Date: Saturday, May 28 at 4:30 pm

Venue: Knowhere, 15, Favourite Plaza, Dodda Banaswadi Main Rd, Cooke Town. See the Google Map here.
