Dive In

Enormously engaging and charming and funny and light, despite the various subjects it’s dealing with…a perfectly decent beach read for absolutely everyone.

That’s how the chairman of the panel of judges described Geetanjali Shree’s ‘Tomb of Sand’—which became the first novel written in an Indian language to win the International Booker Prize. Shree will share the £50,000 prize with her translator Daisy Rockwell. Some of the novelists Shree beat out for the honour include the Nobel Prize-winning Polish novelist Olga Tokarczuk. For more on the novel, check out The Hindu’s review.

Stuff to check out: On the latest episode of the splainer podcast ‘Press Decode’, the splainer team looks at the laws involved in the mandir-masjid controversy—and the way we use the word ‘like’. Be sure to head over to the IVM website, Spotify or Apple Podcasts to listen to it.

The Texas school massacre: A shocking failure to protect

The TLDR: Details on the mass killing of 19 fourth grade children reveal that the local police did not immediately move to disarm the shooter—and instead assaulted desperate parents urging them to enter the school.  Also: Republicans show signs of moving toward a minimal form of gun control called ‘red flag’ laws.
