Dive In

The story is unsubstantiated, incomplete, and factually incorrect. Amazon has always been and remains compliant with all Indian laws… We haven't seen the documents referenced and Reuters hasn't shared provenance to confirm veracity—the details are likely supplied with malicious intent to create sensation and discredit us.

That’s from an email sent by Amazon India chief Amit Agarwal to employees furiously denying a Reuters investigation. Based on internal documents, the report showed that just 35 of more than 400,000 sellers in India accounted for around two-thirds of its online sales—and that the company was deliberately intent on skirting Indian laws to suit its interests.

Facebook vs Australia: The big battle over news

The TLDR: Do tech companies like Google and Facebook help media publishers by freely distributing their news content to a wide audience? Or are they making free use of their content to mop up billions of dollars in advertising revenue? That’s the core issue at stake in the battle between Facebook and the government—which escalated when FB cut off all access to news for Australian users on its platform. Why this matters: Other governments are watching closely. And the outcome of this face-off could affect the future of news around the world.
